It’s GITEX week – in other words, the time when Dubai hosts the world’s largest tech, AI, and start-up show. For those in the industry, your days are probably filled with supplier and client meetings or discovering new products. But once evening sets in, you’re likely looking for things to do and restaurants to explore.

Thanks to its close proximity to the exhibiton venue, here are some activities you can enjoy in Downtown Dubai (in and around Dubai Mall) during GITEX week. The best part? You won’t need a booking for most of them. You’re welcome!

Check out Dubai Fountain

There are plenty of fantastic things to do in Downtown Dubai, but a firm favourite is watching the magical Dubai Fountains. Recently reopened after a manjor renovation, it’s the world’s largest choreographed water show and the tallest dancing fountain. Head to Dubai Mall’s waterfront promenade to enjoy this beautiful spectacle free of charge. Evening shows take place daily, every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm.

Admire Burj Khalifa

Didn’t get tickets to the Burj Khalifa viewing deck? Don’t be disappointed! You can still admire the iconic building from outside. Dubai Mall’s waterfront promenade and the surrounding areas offer some great spots to capture Instagram-worthy shots – all without spending a dirham.

Relax or grab a quick bite at Chinatown

Appreciate marine life at Dubai Aquarium

While the ideal way to get up close with marine life at Dubai Aquarium is through the walk-through tunnel and underwater zoo, you can still enjoy the mesmerising sights from outside – no ticket required. The world’s largest suspended aquarium, located on the ground floor of the mall, is home to over 140 species, including more than 300 sharks and rays.

Take the pilot’s seat in a flight simulator

Ready to pilot your way to an unforgettable experience at Dubai Mall? The Emirates Airline A380 experience let’s your take the pilot’s seat in a state-of-the-art flight simulator. In other words, you’ll get to feel both the thrill and challenges of flying the world’s largest passenger plane – on your own terms. This one-of-a-kind experience is priced at AED 160 for 15 minutes, AED 300 for 30 minutes, and AED 575 for 60 minutes. Shop and dine at Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall’s 200 dining outlets offer a range of cuisines – from American to Chinese, French, and even fast food. In short, there’s something for even the pickiest eaters and you’re guaranteed a meal when most restaurants around the exhibition halls will be packed. Follow it up with some retail therapy. There are more than 1,200 shops in Dubai Mall, including department stores like Bloomingdale’s and Galeries Lafayette.

Try weird and wacky ice cream flavours

Experience a flavour adventure at Noon’s Ice Cream Project pop-up at the Star Atrium in Dubai Mall. Expect inventive flavours such as pesto Genovese, green peas, and even ketchup and mustard ice cream. The pop-up runs until 19th October.
